Programs
The Department of Archaeology/Art History offers both majors and minors in Archaeology and Art History. The Archaeology major is focused on the ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean and surrounding areas. Our three archaeologists offer courses relating to ancient Greece, Rome, Etruria, Egypt, the Near East, Britain, and other areas of Western Europe. The department co-sponsors an excavation at the important Etruscan site of Murlo in Italy, providing an excellent learning opportunity for undergraduates interested in learning excavation techniques. The archaeology major's interdisciplinary approach allows students to see how perspectives from history, anthropology, literature, the physical sciences and other fields can be brought to bear in interpreting archaeological remains. The archaeology major is flexible, permitting students to undertake study abroad at Harlaxton College, UE's British campus, or independent programs such as College Year in Athens, Aix-en-Provence in France, or the Intercollegiate Studies Center in Rome. Many of our talented students continue their studies in archaeology or related fields at the graduate level; some pursue work in the field of contract archaeology. In addition to students wishing to become archaeologists or professionals in allied fields, the department is pleased to be home to many students whose primary interest is a liberal arts education; UE archaeology alumni also attend law or business school, library science programs, or enter seminaries to pursue careers in those areas.
The Art History major emphasizes the role of art as both a reflection and driving force of cultures. Highlighting the long tradition of Western Art, yet providing exposure to non-Western cultures, the two art historians help students develop an understanding of the evolution of art over time and how art functions not only as a medium for individual expression or aesthetic pleasure, but also as an active part of broader historical and cultural trends. As with the Archaeology major, the Art History major encourages study abroad. Internships, both local and farther afield, are available for those students wishing to pursue careers in museums.
